World of Warcraft game becomes virtual economy

October 17th, 2007

World of WarcraftSince the PC video game World of Warcraft launched in America back on November 23rd, 2004, it has become the most popular subscription-based Massively Multiplayer Online Role-Playing Game (MMORPG) around the world.

It was the bestselling PC game of 2005 and 2006 and has remained at or near the top of the weekly PC-game sales charts for much of 2007 as well. Blizzard’s Burning Crusade expansion released to critical acclaim in several regions earlier this year and shattered PC-game sales records in Europe & America, with nearly 2.4 million copies sold in its first 24 hours of release and approximately 3.5 million in its first month. World of Warcraft is available in seven different languages and, in addition to Europe & America, the MMORPG is played in mainland China, Korea, Australia, New Zealand, Singapore, Thailand, Malaysia, and the regions of Taiwan, Hong Kong, and Macau.

It should be no surprise that the game now has over 9 million monthly subscribers and is part of a growing MMORPG industry that’s expected to have a market for the virtual goods, in the MMORPG’s people play, of over US$4 billion by 2008. So aside from game sales, monthly subscription sales, there’s a market for virtual currency trading like warcraft gold that’s used in-game to buy virtual goods with, a popular pastime for players. GameGoods is a premium player in this industry and one of the best companies to but world of warcraft gold with really competitive prices, 24/7 customer service and extremely fast delivery speeds. Because that’s what the internet provides, an economy that never sleeps.

Bluefin Tuna Fisheries catch more than they bargained for WWF report says

October 15th, 2007

WWF logoA new WWF (The World Wide Fund for Nature) report has revealed that 1,000s of seabirds and significant numbers of sharks and marine turtles are being caught and killed each year in long-line fishing nets meant to capture the southern bluefin tuna.

Japan’s long-line southern bluefin tuna fleet, for example, killed between 6,000 and 9,000 seabirds per year in the 2001 and 2002 fishing seasons. About three-quarters were albatrosses and one-fifth petrels.

It is estimated that annual seabird deaths from all southern bluefin tuna fishing could be as high as 13,500, including some 10,000 albatrosses. Of the 22 species of albatrosses, 19 are classified as threatened with extinction, according to the World Conservation Union.

“Southern bluefin tuna long-line fleets are fishing blind, with little or no understanding of their devastating impact on threatened species,” says Dr Simon Cripps, Director of WWF’s Global Marine Programme.

“Responsible countries must urgently implement measures to dramatically reduce the death toll.”

The new report — Behind the Facade: A Decade of Inaction on Non-Target Species in Southern Bluefin Tuna Fisheries — exposes ten years of inaction by members of the Commission for the Conservation of Southern Bluefin Tuna (CCSBT), and calls for reform measures to be agreed at their upcoming annual meeting in Australia to stem the catch of endangered wildlife and reduce chronic overfishing.

Tip of the day: infinity razors

October 15th, 2007

While razors have been identified from many Bronze Age cultures as early as 3500-1100 BCE, replacing them regularly has also been around for just as annoyingly long. How incredibly handy would it be if you never have to buy a shaving razor again?

Now you actually can, because the infinity razor last forever. The Infinity Razor comes with a 30-day Money Back Guarantee and Lifetime Replacement Guarantee that should take away your doubts as they’ll replace it for free if you think it’s less sharp than it should be. But as they say, that’s not going to happen, besides if you buy one you get a second one free. At two tenners that’s a win-win situation. I hope this tip of the day was helpful.

Six-year-old girl facing $300 fine for drawing on the sidewalk with chalk

October 12th, 2007

Brooklyn hates creativity
After neighbours complained about the above 6-year-old Park Slope girl drawing a pretty picture with common sidewalk chalk of her parents own front stoop. She is now presented a $300 fine by the city of Brooklyn. The Sanitation Department warning letter read: “Please remove the graffiti from your property. Failure to comply may result in enforcement action against you.”

Does that sound unreal to you as well? How on Earth could a kid’s chalk drawing be best decribed as “graffiti”? It actaully washes away after the next rainfall will hit the city. Still, City Council passed local law 111 in 2005, which defined “graffiti” as the following description: “any letter, word, name, number, symbol, slogan, message, drawing, picture, writing … that is drawn, painted, chiseled, scratched, or etched on a commercial building or residential building.”

“He could have just asked!” mom said. “This whole thing is ridiculous. Admittedly, this drawing was not her best work — she usually sticks to cheerful scenes, not abstracts, frankly — but to send a warning letter like that is outrageous.” And funny.
