Designer food: eat a tiger tomato or how about a strawmato?
The latest designer food to tempt consumers has hit the supermarket shelves… a green and red-striped tomato. Marks & Spencer (M&S) said the tiger tomato was created in response to increased demand for novelty produce.
The cherry-sized fruit has magenta-coloured (dark red) flesh and is slightly sweeter than standard varieties. M&S said the tomatoes were grown in Lancashire and the Isle of Wight.
British Tomato Growers Association chairman Gerry Hayman said: “There is a continuing demand for novelty and variety tomatoes.
“The different shapes and sizes of speciality products make them popular as they are distinctive.”
M&S is also launching an even sweeter-tasting variety called the “strawmato“, which it says goes well with melted chocolate. A tomato so sweet it tastes like strawberries? I’ll try that!
The developments follow a 32% rise in sales of speciality tomatoes at M&S over the last year.
