Man loses job after accepting cancer treatment donations
A cancer survivor alleges in a federal lawsuit that he was wrongfully fired from his job as a fire inspector because he accepted 25-thousand dollars in donations.
The money was raised to help Ronald Michalowicz pay his medical bills. Michalowicz was diagnosed with tongue cancer in 2003. He later left his job with Bedford Park to undergo chemotherapy.
But when he returned to work in 2005, an investigation into the donations was conducted by the village. He was then fired for violating the state’s Gift Ban Act and a municipal ban on employees accepting gifts that could affect their decision making. Michalowicz is suing Bedford Park, its mayor and village board.
