Baby driving a car causes crash
Two motorists were hospitalized last week following a bizarre traffic accident involving a baby at the wheel. Pevely Police Capt. Dave Kaltenbronn said the mother of a 20-month-old girl placed her daughter in her lap while driving on Commercial Boulevard, allowing the child to steer.
While steering, the 20-month-old crossed the centerline and hit an oncoming pick-up truck head on. The truck carried two passengers, both from the De Soto area. Officials with the Dunklin Fire Protection District had to extricate the pair from the wrecked truck using the Jaws of Life.
Both were transported to area hospitals with broken bones, lacerations and other injuries. Neither the baby nor her mother, Bahiyyah Khalilah, were seriously injured. Kaltenbronn said the mother gave conflicting statements regarding why the baby was steering.
“She said the baby became fussy and she pulled over to change a diaper,” he said. “She then sat the baby on her lap and allowed her to steer while the mother worked the gas and brakes. That’s not going to work when the baby’s 20 months old.”
Kaltenbronn said police believe the woman may have recently stopped taking her medication. “She was making bizarre statements,” he said. “She said she let the baby drive because she ‘felt it in her heart.”’ Khalilah has not been charged with a crime.
Kaltenbronn said it was one of the more bizarre cases he’s handled. “Just when you think you’ve seen everything, something like this pops up,” he said.
